Beels are the low-lying depressions in the floodplain. They have a permanent character, containing water throughout the year (Perinnial beels) or dry completely out during a part, mostly 4-5 months, of the year (seasonal year).

Bangladesh is a riverine country. There are 260 indigenous freshwater bony fish species, suitable for human consumption, belonging to 145 genera and 55 families, constitute a very rich aquatic bio-diversity in Bangladesh (Craig et al. 2004). Fish is the main source of animal protein and essential nutrients in the peoples diet throughout the country. It contributes about 58% (DoF, 2011) of animal protein to our daily diet. The demand of fish has increased due to increase in population. Our per capital annual fish demand is 20.44 kg (DoF, 2011) but we are getting only 18.94 kg (DoF, 2011).
